Father James Phalan, CSC

Director

Family Rosary International

Father James (Jim) Phalan, CSC, a priest of the Congregation of Holy Cross, is Director of Family Rosary International, comprised of offices in 16 countries. The ministry encourages family prayer, especially the Rosary, throughout the world. It is a member of Holy Cross Family Ministries, furthering the prayer and media ministries of Servant of God Father Patrick Peyton, CSC, the famous “Rosary priest” and Catholic media pioneer.

Fluent in English, Spanish, French and Portuguese, Father Jim travels extensively working with the directors of each of the international offices: Bangladesh; Brazil; Chile; East Africa (Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania); France; India; Ireland; Mexico; Peru; the Philippines; Spain; Uruguay; and West Africa (Ghana and Sierra Leone).

He works with the international directors in carrying out programs and activities to encourage family prayer, especially the Rosary, in respect to the local traditions and customs. There are sessions on how to pray the Rosary, retreats, missions, weekly radio programs, television programs, contests and various other activities that assist families to pray.

Before his current position, from 1994 to 2007, he was Director of Family Rosary Peru, one of the international offices.

Father Jim has extensive experience in parish ministry and in the formation of seminarians and brothers in the Congregation of Holy Cross.

He is a member of Mariological Society of America and currently serves as its Vice President.

Father Jim was ordained a Holy Cross priest in 1992 in Peru. He has two master’s degrees from Weston Jesuit School of Theology, one in theology (2000) and another in divinity (1990). He has done extensive studies in oriental religions and the spirituality of the world in various Catholic and Buddhist monasteries.

Father Jim, who was reared in Eastern Massachusetts (Boston and Cape Cod areas), resides in Easton, Mass., and enjoys jogging, hiking and reading. “My real love,” he says, “is my priesthood and Holy Cross Family Ministries’ mission and letting the Lord take me where He will in its service. This has led me all over the world. The experience of traveling, knowing many peoples, cultures, geographies, with the Church in the middle of it all, is very engaging and absorbing!”
