Father David Guffey, C.S.C., a priest of the Congregation of Holy Cross, is the National Director of Family Theater productions and is responsible for all activities of Family Theater Productions, including both the media production activities and the pastoral outreach activities: “Hollywood Prays,” the outreach efforts to young Catholics and others in Hollywood includes monthly Prayer and Pasta gatherings, RCIA classes, Going Deeper (a new evangelization initiative), Faith & Film Bible Study, and Theology of the Body workshops as well as daily Rosary and Mass and the weekly Eucharistic Holy Hour. He was the Director of Film, Television, and Video for Family Theater Productions, Hollywood, since 2008, and was responsible for moving a project from development through post production.
He produces television, film and video programs, including planning the production budget and assembling and supervising the crew during filming and post-production. Father David Guffey has numerous credits for his award-winning work in television and film. They include “Carrying On,” “You Will See,” “Finding Mary” and “Assumptions” – all with Family Theater Productions. He was also writer and director for the short film “Last Deal at the Mt. Carroll Gun Club.”
In addition, Father David also spearheaded the efforts to place Family Theater Productions programs on the Internet and to create video for the Holy Cross Family Ministries’ websites. Father David frequently presents lectures and retreats on film and spirituality, including the Garaventa Lecture at the University of Portland and the Los Angeles Religious Education Congress. Some of his insights are shared in the Family and Faith Blog of Family Theater Productions. He assists with the pastoral outreach to Hollywood, by offering spiritual direction, celebrating the sacraments, and participating in programs and events.
He grew up about 50 miles south of Dubuque, Iowa, in Mt. Carroll, Illinois, where his parents Gary and Eileen Guffey, and his sister, Lisa, who is now married and has six children, still live. He enjoys film, hiking, photography, videography and travel in any form. He is a Notre Dame football enthusiast and a Los Angeles Dodgers’ fan.
In the years following ordination, he led
, a soup kitchen in Phoenix, Arizona, and developed a major center of service to the poor and homeless in central Phoenix. He spent eight years serving in various roles in religious formation, including Assistant Superior at Moreau Seminary and Director of Novices for Holy Cross in North America.
