When Moses asked God to reveal his name, God replied from the burning bush “I am who I am…Tell the Israelites that ‘He who is’ sent you.” The Hebrew name for God, “Yahweh,” is an ancient form of the verb “to be.” The name “Yahweh,” therefore, tells us not who God is but that he is. For God is beyond our powers of comprehension. He is the creator of all that exists. He is from all eternity. His eternity embraces the whole of time. He is the Lord of all, for “in him we live, and move and have our being.” Our dependence on Him is complete and absolute. How foolish to pretend otherwise. How much better to recognize his dominion over us and to thank him for his blessings.
