… A Minute Meditation
October 2, 2009
In John’s Gospel we read that John the Baptist recognized Jesus as the Lamb of God because he saw the Spirit come down from heaven and remain on him. The word “remain” is significant here. The English words “remain” and “mansion” both come from the Latin “manere” and signify that John recognized that Jesus was the dwelling place of God’s Spirit and would baptize in the Holy Spirit.John’s Gospel describes the death of Jesus in these words “and bowing his head he gave up his Spirit.” This same Holy Spirit was poured out upon the Apostles at Pentecost when the mission of the Church began.
At Baptism we become members of Christ’s Mystical Body, temples of the Holy Spirit, and live in hope of eternal life in the heavenly mansion Christ has prepared for us.
